Retrograde Mercury turns attention inward toward thought: words, decisions, documents, routes, study, messages, and promises. This is not a ban on action, but a period of checking: where an answer was given too quickly, where meaning was not heard, and where information needs clarification before the next step.
During this period, thought rarely moves in a straight line. It returns to old letters, unfinished conversations, forgotten details, previous plans, and words that were not spoken quite accurately. It may seem that people understand each other less well, although the problem is often not the absence of meaning, but the form: how a thought is packaged, who it is addressed to, and at what moment it is said.
